West Liberty Police Department Concludes Investigation into Child Drowning; Determined to Be Accidental
The West Liberty Police Department has concluded its investigation into the tragic drowning of a 1-year-old child that occurred on August 25, 2025, in the 500 block of E 1st St. After a comprehensive review of witness statements, physical evidence, and medical examination reports, investigators have determined the incident to be accidental.
West Liberty Officers and West Liberty Fire/EMS personnel were dispatched to the scene at approximately 1154am after receiving a 911 call reporting a child found unresponsive in a backyard swimming pool. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by the family, first responders, and hospital medical staff, the child was later pronounced deceased at University of Iowa Hospital.
The West Liberty Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the child’s family, friends, and all those impacted by this tragedy. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, the child’s name will not be released at this time. The conclusion of this investigation is intended to provide clarity and a sense of closure to the family and all those affected by this heartbreaking event.
The department also wishes to recognize and thank the following agencies for their assistance, professionalism, and support during this incident and throughout the investigation:
West Liberty Fire/EMS, Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office, Muscatine Police Department Peer Support Team, and the Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office.
