Notice of Roadway Construction
Purpose: Reconstruction of E. 6th Street from Columbus Street to Corn Street and Farmer’s Lane from E. 6th Street to E. 7th Street. Replacement of sidewalks, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water main and conversion of overhead electric to underground electric utilities.
Location: E. 6th Street from Columbus Street to Corn Street and Farmers Lane from E. 6th Street to E. 7th Street
Anticipated Start Date: Monday, July 13th, 2026
Electric Utilities
Beginning Monday, July 13th, MJ Electric, a contractor hired by the City of West Liberty, will begin work on the East 6th Street Reconstruction Project with relocation of the electric utility from Columbus Street to Corn Street. Work within City right of Way – E 6th Street from Columbus Street to Corn Street. Work will begin with relocating the overhead electric along E. 6th Street and installing it underground along the South side of E. 6th Street in the ROW.
• This work is expected to last 6 to 8 weeks.
• Local access will be maintained throughout the construction.
• MidAmerican will be starting later this month from Farmers Lane to Corn Street to relocate the gas utility. After that section is done the remaining gas main from Columbus Street to Farmers Lane will be relocated this fall.
Reconstruction Schedule
Following the Electric Utility and Gas Utility Relocation, the reconstruction of 6th Street is expected to start and below is the anticipated schedule:
• The street reconstruction work will start at Farmer’s lane to Corn Street. This work is expected to start in Late August/Beginning of September.
• Contractor will be working with local residents on this section of the project for access to residencies, mail and trash collection.
• That section is expected to last 8 weeks.
• Once that section is completed, the new water main is to be installed from Spencer Street to Farmers Lane.
• The remaining work for E. 6th Street from Columbus Street to Farmers Lane and Farmers Lane from E. 6th Street to E. 7th Street is anticipated to be completed in the Spring and Summer of 2027.
• Project Update notices will be provided on a bi-weekly basis moving forward.
• A project website will be set up and made available next week and will be communicated through the City of West Liberty.
Water Service Interruptions
After a section of water main is installed, services will be transferred to the new system.
• Temporary water service interruptions will occur
• Advance notice will be provided prior to any disruptions
• Driveway access may be temporarily restricted
Garbage & Recycling Collection
Garbage and recycling pickup will continue during construction.
Place containers outside the work zone and label them with your address.
Mail Delivery
Mail service will continue. If your mailbox is inaccessible, delivery will be relocated to a nearby accessible location.
Project Restoration
All areas disturbed as part of this project will be fully restored by the contractor upon completion.
