City of West Liberty Announces Transition of Fire Department Operations to West Liberty Agency

July 2, 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

West Liberty, Iowa 7/2/2025 — The City of West Liberty is announcing the formal transition of operational responsibilities for the West Liberty Fire Department to the newly established West Liberty and Rural Townships Fire and Rescue Agency. This change is part of a broader effort to enhance emergency services and streamline operations for the benefit of the community.

Effective July 1, 2025, the West Liberty and Rural Townships Fire and Rescue Agency will assume full responsibility for fire protection services within the City of West Liberty and surrounding areas. All equipment and property previously managed by the City will be transferred to the Agency, which has secured the necessary insurance and operational infrastructure to support this transition.

As part of this change:

  • The City will no longer provide utilities, internet, phone, or IT support for fire operations.
  • All City-related information will be removed from fire department computer equipment.
  • Items not included in the official inventory will be returned to the City.

“This transition reflects our commitment to ensuring high-quality, responsive emergency services while allowing the City to focus on its core responsibilities,” said Official or Mayor Mark Smith, “We are confident that the West Liberty and Rural Townships Fire and Rescue Agency will continue to serve our residents with professionalism and dedication.”

The City is also beginning preparations for a future transition of EMS services to the West Liberty Agency. This planning phase will ensure a seamless and coordinated transfer when the time comes.

Residents can expect uninterrupted fire protection services throughout this transition.
