City of West Liberty and Deepak Giri Awarded $1 Million Iowa Workforce Housing Tax Credit

September 21, 2026

The City of West Liberty and local developer Deepak Giri have been awarded a $1 million Iowa Workforce Housing Tax Credit through the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) for the Deepu Chowk Housing Development, a major investment that will expand workforce housing opportunities and support continued community growth.
The Deepu Chowk development will add new housing inventory specifically designed to meet the needs of working families and professionals. The project received the maximum Workforce Housing Tax Credit award of $1 million, reflecting the significance of the development and its impact on housing availability in West Liberty. “This is tremendous news for West Liberty and a major step forward in addressing workforce housing needs within our community,” said City Manager Lee Geertz. “Housing availability plays a critical role in economic development, business recruitment, and supporting existing employers. This project strengthens West Liberty’s ability to grow while ensuring that our workforce has access to quality housing options.”
The successful application was the result of a collaborative effort involving Deepak Giri, We Lead, MMS Consultant Engineers, Goerdt Services and City staff. The We Lead Director worked closely with Mr. Giri, the engineering team, and the City Manager’s Office throughout the application process to position the project for success. Beyond providing new housing opportunities, the development will help West Liberty market itself as a community that is prepared to support current and future business expansion. Access to quality workforce housing remains a key consideration for employers seeking to locate, expand, and retain employees in the region.
The award continues for a strong year for economic and community development initiatives. With this latest accomplishment, the City has secured approximately $1.1 million in IEDA-related awards and funding support in 2026, demonstrating West Liberty’s commitment to pursuing strategic investments that enhance quality of life, economic opportunity, and sustainable growth.
“This achievement reflects the power of partnership and a shared vision for West Liberty’s future,” Geertz added. “We are grateful for the efforts of everyone involved and excited about what this investment means for our community. While there is still work ahead, this is certainly a milestone worth celebrating.”
